Fabio Paris Art Gallery is proud to present Second Hand Illumination (photo link), the gallery’s second solo exhibition of Antonio Cavadini / Tonylight. The exhibition brings together the two currents of the artist’s work:
his visual work on light and his engagement with electronic music. Tonylight is indeed a prominent figure on the Italian 8bit scene,
as well as the founder of the Milan node of the international Micromusic.net community.
Also known as the “chiptune scene”, 8bit music revolves around cleverly transforming obsolete gaming platforms such as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) or the Commodore 64 into audio synthesizers capable of producing nostalgic, lo-fi sounds, and at the same time freeing these sounds from their past and offering an original contribution to the contemporary electronic arena.
Like 8bit music, the light in the series Space LED (2007 – 2009) is also “second hand”, in so far as it comes from various animations visualized on small LED screens manually assembled by the artist himself.
These animations – elementary images taken from 8bit videogame cartridges such as Space Invaders – allude to the dawn of the era of digital media, in which the “first electronic sparks” struck our imagination, leaving a permanent legacy of images, aesthetics and colours that we now regard with fond nostalgia.
Second Hand Illumination is completed by Nanonoise (2009), a video projection which is the result of a collaboration between Tonylight, for the sound, and the American artist Jeff Donaldson / Notendo, who accompanies the music with abstract animations produced by an old, modified NES.
The exhibition opened with a musical performance by Tonylight.

In December 2009, the artist will exhibit his work in the group exhibition Mediateca Expandida. Playlist, curated by Domenico Quaranta for the LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, Gjon, Spain (18 December 2009 – 17 May 2010).

Unique but also created with the only aim of being multiplied, the prototype is located between the piece of art and the industrial object. It is precisely this ambiguity which interests us.
Initially “Prototipi Manzoni” will be a platform in the atrium of a mythical theatre in Milan. During the Milan Furniture Fair, from April 17-19 2008, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. a series of prototypes will be presented among conferences, discussions, tastings and meetings, as well as via this interface.
In order to facilitate the networking of this unique series, in hardware as well as in software, the space of the atrium will be equipped with Wi-Fi and will be large enough to accomodate prototyping material of any size and kind.
“Prototipi Manzoni” will then be the subject of a publication and a presentation in Switzerland.

Once upon a time there was the Gameboy. Small and easy to handle, an instrument for nomadic fun that gives our minds the fantasy world of plumbing from Super Mario while our bodies moved about the city.
The Gameboy is still here today: even despite the design mock up that restyled the object itself, its hard for Gameboy to marvel the modern day electronic nomads that go from Cell phone to Bluetooth to the ever so stylish I-pod.
And if many still try to play it, a compact group of passionate Gameboy users has transformed it into a musical instrument, not just an object to play but really to PLAY!
Taking a vast array of acute and minimal sounds.
It's called; Micromusic, and in a few years time it has earned itself a little corner in clubs all across the world. Despite this, the poor little Gameboy misses the life on the road.
For this reason Tonylight, who - before he played music on his Gameboy he played it's games - didn't have the heart to give its powers to the night, taking it away from the street and sun.
More than a portable amplifier, the Solar Audio Bag is a way of life. Half way between the logic of the Transformers and the ethics of "do it yourself", the Bag is a simple trolley that transforms itself into a powerful means of street music.
It's wheels restores the portability to the Gameboy and it's freedom is amplified by a solar panel, giving it that ecological edge.
It's too cheap to feel fake, it's all there, all you have to do is pull a lever, adjust the volume and adjust the gain to give the Gameboy's electric voice back to the sound context of the street.
Bringing two worlds together, once again.
